GOP: Be It Resolved That ObamaCare Must Go

Category: Health Care
Posted: 03/29/10 03:46

by Dave Mindeman

The legislative Republicans sure do want that ObamaCare done away with. That ObamaCare is going to destroy America. Sen. Ortman wanted to put together a resolution in the MN Senate to put the state on record as opposing this "travesty".

I wonder how it would go....

Be it resolved that Minnesota is against everything that ObamaCare tries to do.

Therefore, we oppose -

-The idea that Health insurance providers cannot deny any child coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
- the concept that Insurance companies can no longer drop someone when he or she becomes ill.
- the provision that young adults can stay on their parents' health insurance plan up to their 27th birthday.
- that Health Insurers must now reveal how much money is spent on overhead.
- the requirement that new health insurance plans must cover checkups and other preventative care without co-pays.
- the new measures that will be implemented to help eliminate health insurance waste, fraud, and abuse.
- the idea that small businesses (fewer than 50 employees) will get tax credits covering up to 50% of premiums.
- that seniors on Medicare will get a rebate to fill part of the "donut hole" in their drug coverage.
- forcing insurers to put more premiums dollars toward actual health care services, not administration, advertising, or profits.
- the provision that insurance premium increases will have to be reviewed and justified.
- the rule that lifetime caps on the amount of insurance a person can have will be banned.
- the set-up of a temporary high-risk pool that will cover adults with pre-existing conditions.

and we hereby resolve that any and all of these provision shoud be vigorously opposed by our Attorney General as being in violation of the Constitution and Minnesota statute.

Therefore, we also resolve that ObamaCare be repealed along with all of the above stated provisions.

I expect the Republican State Senators will all sign onto that resolution at their earliest convenience.

They can, but I wonder how many Minnesotans would?

CD2: A Vote for Madore

Category: John Kline
Posted: 03/28/10 22:48

by Dave Mindeman

OK... I talked a bit about the CD2 Congressional race in my last post. Discussing how Dan Powers fits the mold of the previous patterns.

But this is what is really on my mind regarding the 2nd District.

Throw the darn molds out the window. Now. This district can't afford to play it "safe". We need a new direction.

The general consensus seems to be saying that Democrats are going to really get hit hard this year. That they will be lucky not to lose their majority in the US House.

But wait a minute.

Now that the health care debate has been finalized, the Democrats can now get off the defensive and start moving ahead again. Sure, there will still be attacks, but this new health care bill has a defensible position and as time goes by and the world does not end, maybe other issues will move to the front.

And, about that economy. It isn't where we would like it to be, but it is improving. Work needs to be done on housing, but businesses are slowly working out of an economic slowdown and jobs issues are changing, slowly, to a more positive direction.

If the Republicans lose the obstruction of health care as an issue; and if the economy starts improving and the GOP need for economic gloom and doom starts to wither away, what do they have left?

I mean really, what can Republican House members like John Kline point to as accomplishments? Can he talk about how much he has helped the district's roads and bridges? Can he point to any assistance with mass transit? Can he really say he has done anything for the 2nd District outside of holding up that "red card" he is so proud to show everyone?

I don't see anything of substance, do you?

But, if we move into that situation. If things improve for Democrats to the point that they can resume a debate on the future rather than obstructionism, we will need somebody who will be willing to stand toe to toe with Kline. Someone who can dig deep into the issues and engage the opposition.

So, who does the 2nd District endorse to meet that opportunity?

Well, we have Dan Powers. An engaging and friendly candidate who has been on a learning curve over the last year. And who has improved greatly in talking about 2nd District issues. He has a good general grasp, which is probably good enough, assuming you like the past results, -- if not challenged. But, Kline will challenge everything that he says. Kline is a hard boiled individual who fights hard and fights dirty. He looks for any sign of weakness and hits it like a barracuda.

I'm not trying to question Dan Powers as a candidate, but we have to think realistically. I find it disconcerting that Powers won't take a chance on debating his Democratic opponent, Shelley Madore, yet wants us to believe that he is ready for a bare knuckle brawl with the Colonel.

Then we have Shelley Madore. Madore has legislative experience. She is one of the more knowledgeable people on both health care and transportation issues. She has the gut instincts and the core knowledge of issues that can fully take on Kline when he is trying to pull something on us. She has engaged in tough debates and is more than willing to take on what is needed for endorsement or for the general election.

Now, Madore has questions marks. Her campaign has had some turnover and things sometimes look a bit unsettled. That certainly has to be factored in. And Madore certainly has a legislative record that Kline can try to manipulate -- he's done it before. However, any candidate has to be prepared to defend their past record and at least Madore's record is a solidly progressive one.

Like I said in the previous post, Powers may be a "safe" choice, but if the 2nd District actually wants to have even a chance at winning this year, "safe" isn't going to cut it.

Madore got into this race late. She rejected calls for her to step aside and just let Powers get the easy endorsement, because she just had that fire and confidence that she is the right candidate to take on a difficult challenge. She has had to compete with a lot of other campaigns for people and money, but the Madore campaign actually has more named delegates than Powers at this point.

Madore may not be the "safe" choice. But I'm tired of 42% safe choices. I want to see a candidate that will debate anyone at anytime and anywhere. I want to see John Kline sweat. I want to see a candidate engage Congressman Kline boldly and directly. I want a candidate who can stand equal to Kline on issues and knowledge.

I'm tired of "safe" choices -- this is the year for risk taking in the 2nd District.

I think you know where I'm going here. Speaking only for myself, as a delegate to the CD2 convention, I'm voting Madore.

CD2: Dan Powers -- The Safe Choice?

I've been putting this off for awhile because I can't get a full handle on the 2nd Congressional DFL endorsement race. It's a tough climb for anybody....Kline is seriously entrenched. But I have been examining the situation and I'll throw in some of my thoughts.

First, let's take a look at Dan Powers.

I had an extensive phone conversation with Dan a few weeks ago. I was mildly surprised at the improvement he has managed to achieve over the course of the last year. He has a pretty good grasp of issues, but I'm still not certain he has a strategy for November that can make it happen.

You see, the 2nd District history with Kline is a tale of carbon copies. Let me show you what I mean.....

2002(First time Kline won)

Kline..............53.33
Luther............40.31

2004

Kline..............56.38
Teresa Daly....40.31

2006

Kline..............56.20
Coleen Rowley.40.04

2008

Kline..............57.29
Steve Sarvi.....42.55

Looks like a pretty similar pattern doesn't it? Let's skip Luther's race because that was a redistricting year, but each cycle after that produced nearly identical results. Kline wins by about 16 points.

What's the old adage? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? That is essentially what the 2nd District DFL seems to be doing. They just keep usng the same old same old. And that is precisely the result -- the same.

Now, I will stipulate that 2006 had produced a little bit of variety because Coleen Rowley tried to stir things up a bit. However, true to form, the 2nd District DFL didn't know what to do with it. The Rowley campaign was underfunded and truth be told, clearly under supported by the party. But she still did about as well as any other candidate has fared, before or since.

Which brings us to Dan Powers. Now, I like Dan. He is a good guy. You hear that a lot when people discuss him. But look up Leo Durocher and nice guys.....you'll see what I mean.

Dan is a lot like Sarvi and a lot like Teresa Daly. Good candidates that follow the 2nd District formula. A formula that doesn't produce anything more than 42.55% against John Kline.

mnpACT! talked to the Powers campaign about having a debate with Shelley Madore, sponsored by mnpACT! They weren't sure about it and said they'd wait and see what the Madore campaign did. Well, the Madore campaign didn't get back to us right away...there seemed to be a little communication problem. But when they finally did, they agreed to do the debate. When we returned to the Powers campaign, we found a full change of heart. They said that it was now too late for such an event. They told us they had scheduled events right through to the April convention. Probably true. Time is running short....I understand that.

And it is the "safe" thing to do. Don't rock the boat. Stick to the plan. Follow the formula. The problem is that it is the 42.55% formula.

Frankly, I'd like to kick that formula out the window. I'd like to see some bold ideas. Shake things up. Do something that breaks out of this cookie cutter methodology that the DFL 2nd District party seems to be chained to.

Kline isn't worried. He'd like these plans to continue just the way they are. It's what works in the 2nd District DFL, at least for Kline.

Yes, Dan Powers is a nice guy. A nice guy who doesn't want to debate his opponent for endorsement, because it's safe. A guy who says all the right things that can meet his needs for the 2nd District DFL formula. A guy that will take his safe formula and head into the November election against a confident incumbent who knows how to win against the cookie cutters.

Maybe we all should be satisfied with that. Maybe that's the best we an do. Really, maybe it is.

But I'd sure like to think there is more to it than that.

I like to think there is 7.46% more to it.
